Dr Rumiana Yotova

I am interested in helping establish the nascent field of International Biomedical Law which looks at the international governance of science and technology in the field of biomedicine. My work builds on the principles developed in International Human Rights Law, on the anticipatory duties of States in the field of International Environmental Law, on the law of the global commons, as well as on a number of soft law standard-setting international instruments in the field. My publications assess the right to benefit from science, the anticipatory duties of States in the field of biomedicine and the international regulation of the human genome, including germline editing. I was commissioned to write an expert report for the Nuffield Council on Bioethics on "The Regulation of Genome Editing and Human Reproduction under International, EU and Comparative Law". Most recently, I prepared two reports for the Council of Europe's Steering Committee for Human Rights in the Field of Biomedicine and Health on human rights-based approaches to healthcare.
